An Introductory Overview of Yingkou City
Located on the northeast coast of the Bohai Sea, at the mouth of the Big Liao River, Yingkou is strategically positioned between Shenyang and Dalian cities. Administratively, it comprises two cities (Gaizhou City and Dashiqiao City) and four districts (Bayuquan, Zhanqian, Xishi, and Laobian), covering a total area of 5,427 square kilometers with a population of 2.329 million people.
Yingkou is a century-old port city that emerged and thrived due to its harbor. It was once renowned as the "Oriental Trade Hub" and "little Shanghai in Northeast China". In 1985, Yingkou become one of the first coastal “open” cities designated by the state, ushering a new era of comprehensive opening-up and development. Particularly, with national developmental strategies such as the revitalization of the old industrial bases in Northeast China and the development and opening-up of the coastal economic belt in Liaoning, Yingkou transitioned from a river-oriented city to a sea-oriented one economically, drawing growth from multiple regions. This shift led to remarkable achievements in socio-economic development.
In April 2017, following the establishment of the Yingkou Area of the Liaoning Free Trade Zone, both the Yingkou Comprehensive Bonded Zone and the national cross-border e-commerce pilot zone received approval. Additionally, with the launch of significant projects such as the sole national logistics hub city in Northeast China, a core cold-chain logistics base, an industrial internet identification and resolution secondary node, and the country's inaugural "Xinghuo BIF" core node, Yingkou seized a historic opportunity for a new phase of opening up and development.
Yingkou stands out with immense potential for development, highlighted by its national-level economic and technological development zone alongside seven provincial-level economic development zones. Furthermore, it is home to the Yingkou Area of Liaoning Free Trade Zone, uniquely combining the features of a free trade zone, comprehensive bonded zone, and high-tech zone. Supported by robust infrastructure, abundant resources, and a favorable business environment, Yingkou earned recognition as the most desirable investment destination in 2023.
Yingkou enjoys a prominent geographical advantage, situated at the convergence of the Northeast Asia Economic Circle, the Bohai Rim Economic Circle, the Liaoning Coastal Economic Belt, and the Shenyang Economic Circle. It serves as the closest gateway to the sea from the northeastern hinterland and the sole maritime passage for the Shenyang Economic Circle. Additionally, Yingkou occupies a pivotal position in the "Belt and Road Initiative," serving as the maritime gateway for the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor. It marks the starting point of the rail line from China through Central Asia to Europe and serves as the most economical and convenient conduit for trade between China and South Korea, Russia and South Korea, and Europe and South Korea. With its unique geographical advantage of bridging east and west and linking north and south, Yingkou offers unparalleled prospects for investment and development.
Yingkou boasts a comprehensive logistics system. In 2019, it was selected as the sole city in Northeast China designated for national logistics hub construction. In 2020, it earned approval as the only national core cold-chain logistics base in the region. In maritime transportation, Yingkou Port stands as the core port of the Liaodong Bay Economic Circle, linking to over 140 ports in more than 50 countries. Its sea-rail intermodal transportation consistently ranks among the nation's best, with over 40 domestic shipping routes covering major ports nationwide, comprising two-thirds of the total volume in Northeastern ports. For land transportation, Yingkou is intersected by key routes including the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway, the Harbin-Dalian Railway, the Shenyang-Dalian Expressway, and the Coastal Highway. Its road and railway connections to ports are extensive and well-established. In terms of air transportation, Yingkou Lanqiao Airport holds significance as one of the crucial civilian airports in the Bohai Rim and the entire Northeast region. Plans are underway for the construction of a cargo hub airport. By 2023, cargo and mail throughput is projected to reach 599 tons. Benefitting from this, Yingkou boasts a seamlessly integrated sea land-air transportation network, enhancing its appeal as an investment destination.
Yingkou boasts a comprehensive industrial landscape, with a modern industrial system encompassing steel, magnesium products, aluminum products, petrochemicals, and grain and oil food and beverages as its leading sectors. Moreover, it hosts unique industries such as automobile maintenance, musical instruments, and jellyfish. Additionally, Yingkou's industrial framework is strategically oriented towards emerging sectors like high-end equipment manufacturing, new materials, new energy, and digital and information technology.
Yingkou boasts abundant human resources. The city possesses a sizable pool of industrial workers, supported by institutions such as Yingkou University of Technology, Yingkou College of Vocationd Techology, as well as several technical schools. These institutions collectively train nearly ten thousand skilled workers annually, with the flexibility to tailor training programs according to specific enterprise needs. Additionally, Yingkou offers a distinct advantage in labor costs.
Yingkou boasts breathtaking natural scenery. Despite its northeastern location, the climate remains relatively mild, with winters lacking severe cold and summers free from excessive heat. The average annual temperature hovers around 10°C, accompanied by moderate rainfall and ample sunshine, creating a pleasant living environment. In 2023, it earned its third recognition as one of China's happiest cities. Moreover, the city's natural and cultural landscapes, including mountains, seas, rivers, forests, springs, and temples, complement each other, enhancing its allure.
